Interior Design by Ollie Collinge

I am going to use this blog to structure my every step over the next three years. I will document my work and thoughts into successfully becoming an Interior Designer.

My final photographs of my model.

Everyone has a way to self express them selves, some just need that bit of help to do so…..

Within my design I am looking to use glass amongst steel. I want my place to have a modernistic, bare feel to it but also incorporate designs that make this place stand out as symbolic/memorable. These two designs, one being a set of stair and the other being a set of shelves really does show, to a t what I am bring to do.

I have put six mood boards together to show/give the feeling of my rooms. The rooms I am creating are there for self expression, relief of stress and anger. I wanted to give something that a gym does not for example i.e. smashing a computer after you have been sat behind one all day, getting worked up, wishing you could just throw it out the window. Well, heres a place you can do just that!

Room one - “The blank canvas”. This is a room where you are faced with a plain white room where it is literally your own play ground. You get the chance to throw, scrape and construct paint as you wish!

Room two - “Voice it”. Ever just wanted to shout at your other half and just get it all of your chest and then forget about it? or just want to shout as loud as you can for no reason? Well room two is where you can do just that, the room offers a microphone and loudness charge so you can challenge that worked up energy and anger.

Room three - “Big chill”. A room to think about what you want, to move around how you want, to become a kid again, roll, jump, you name it, you can do it! The “Big chill” offers you and room padded from corner to corner. Sound proof so no outside noise can disturb “your time” to just be you!

Room four - “Volume”. How loud can you be? The volume room offers you that chance to really let loose and be as noisy as you can. The room offers you drums, along side other things, to bang and and crash together! If this room does not allow you to let out that angry then i don’t know what will.

Room five - “Vendetta”. Ever had someone make you so angry that all you want to do is inflict some sort of pain on them but you know you can’t? Well room “Vendetta” offers you that chance. You have the chance to punch, kick, scream at and even through darts at a ‘stand in’ model of that very person who has put you in that mood!

Room six - “Break it”. Has that computer pushed you to tender points through out the week? have you been trying to put things together and just can’t do it? Now is the chance to get your own back. “Break it” offers a space to bring and break! We also will supply you with things to break as your boss will most probable not appreciate you smashing the office desk top. Room six, “break it” is just another way to de-stress and let loose after them hard days at work.

This is nice! This is the sort of direction I want to head in!

Thinking about what is going to be in my space has made me come to realise that I don’t want to over do it. I want to go down the route of designing in a simplistic, modernised theme. Aspects of the substation, such as the raw brick and the rubble has already given it its own feel and personality. I want to make the space come alive, leave an impact the same way street art does but in a simple way.

I am now at a point where I need to start designing. I need to think about how I am now going to learn from everything I have gathered together and fit it all into my space in the best possible way. I have made a quick sketch model to give myself a rough idea to the dimensions and lay out I am going o be working with.

Self Expression

"The expression of one’s own personality”

Self expression to me is a way for people to become there own. for people to express what ever they want to express, whether its to others or in a room by them self. Self expression releases pain, happiness, excitement etc. I feel Its a way of getting everything out what you want to get out in the way you want to get it out in. I want to create a space where people can do just this, a place where people can do what they want e.g. paint a picture, throw paint everywhere, scream down a microphone, a place to just self express in any way they want to. I feel this will bring the community together in a place that they can all feel on the same level as everyone else and will not be judged. There are many offices around Ancoats, jobs where you have to sit in an office all day, with no way to really let go. I want to create this place to give them this option to let go, a place where they can go after work and release.

Another thing I would like to incorporate is that once the week is over everything is cleaned and started as a ‘fresh canvas’ so that people can do different things every week. I would then want to take the work that has been done that week and have it displayed, allowing people to see it and be proud. The work may have been choosen by the person to be done in a private room so no one knows which bit is who’s, but I want people to be encouraged to come together and start to talk about the work, making people come out abit and start to talk about things that they would never normally talk about.

My interest lies in my self-expression — what’s inside of me — not what I’m in.

what next?

I have been looking into the reasons why people use street are and also what peoples vies are. I believe graffiti especially to be a form of art where people display there thoughts and self expression. I want to now start to think about how I can relate this reasoning behind street art and turn my space in to something meaningful, something with reason, turning my “space” into a “place”.
